Omega Phi Chi, Incorporated
Multicultural Sorority

Shirley Gonzalez
Culture has always been an important factor in Shirley Gonzalez's life as a Puerto Rican who regularly visits her family in Isabella. Regardless of how often she travels to the Caribbean island, she continues to learn something new as well as discover more about herself and her cultural roots. She notes that Puerto Rico provides the best of all worlds with beaches, hillside, and the city atmosphere in close proximity.

Shirley (top right) with sisters in PRIn her efforts to teach Spanish to a group of predominantly white, middle class 6th graders, Shirley hopes to convey the rich traditions that inform the romantic language. It is her opportunity to give back to youth by teaching them how to appreciate, respect, and connect to another culture. She sees the results of her work when a student returns to class, proud of having communicated with someone in Spanish outside the classroom.

Omega Phi Chi was the right sorority for Shirley who enjoys being surrounded by a diverse group of individuals. She appreciates the opportunity to expand her own sense of self by learning about others as well as having a reciprocal exchange of understanding across all levels of difference.

Shirley Gonzalez received her BA and MA in Community Health Education from Rutgers University.
