“The Sisters of Omega Phi Chi are Proud to Support The American Cancer Society Relay for Life”

A sisterhood is a family.  It is a place where we can run to when we need support during those difficult moments.  It is also a place where accomplishments and success stories are shared and celebrated.  As we hear each other’s stories, we realize how many of us have walked through similar paths.  Through these stories, we gain knowledge, strength, and become empowered.

Cancer has been one of many similar stories we all share.  Some of us have lost friends and family members to this disease while others know of someone who is currently fighting this battle.   Fortunately, we have also witnessed loved ones who have won the battle and

now can celebrate another year.

The Sisters of Omega Phi Chi across the states have joined hands to take a stand and fight back while celebrating life at the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.  We will be participating in 8 relays in an effort to bring awareness within our campus and local communities as well as raise funds to help researchers conquer cancer.

The Relay For Life is a powerful fundraising event where teams fundraise and take turns walking or running the track overnight in an effort to fight cancer. Teams unite to camp out, play games, and share stories.  It is an evening where survivorship is celebrated and those lost to cancer are honored for their courage.    It is a place where survivors can share their stories and build a bond.  “Being part of this group of survivors is like a sorority, you're in a sisterhood." says Kelly Healy, a breast cancer survivor.

Everyone who attends this event walks out feeling empowered and reassured that the bonds made through cancer stories, will help them continue to fight this battle.

###

Omega Phi Chi is a multicultural sorority that was established on November 9, 1988 at Rutgers University in New Jersey by eight women of Asian, African-American, and Latina descent.  Our eight Founding Mothers were an active group of young women leaders who felt the absence of any organization on the Rutgers campus that spoke to their needs across diverse backgrounds, distinct cultural roots and a commitment to womanhood.  They came together to found a multicultural sorority, a different type of organization, that would not be categorized by ethnicity or culture.  Our purpose is to generate unity among all women by fostering a sisterhood based on honesty, loyalty, respect, responsibility, academic excellence, and involvement in community service.
